Learning from Bill Starr
Bill Starr’s book The Strongest Shall Survive has a section on recovering from injury. The quick summary is
- Eat well
- Rest a bit
- Get back on the horse
The first one, no problem. The second has taken experimentation. It is the last one which can be tough.
He writes that, after some rest, for hip injuries, squat; for shoulder injuries, press; etc. Meaning use the multi joint lifts to go after the injured area, starting lighter than before the injury and working up, pretty quickly, in reps and weight. Wow, intimidating advice.
Maybe.
We can take it that we are to squat and hope. Or squat and then if it hurts say that is stupid advice or not applicable. Raise a hand if you can relate. I sure can.
There is another way.
We can use the lifts, parts of them, isometric holds at different positions with or without massage, etc. to figure out how to move safely and powerfully. Our only constraints are imagination and commitment.
Skeletal muscles move our bones and our nervous system controls our skeletal muscles. We can figure it out!
