I was told that my chain was plenty audible by my newest riding buddy. Visually it was indeed filthy and, the internet says, that is not good for maximizing the life of the chain and parts it touches. Plus who wants to increase the chance of breaking a chain out on a trail?

I’d bought a Park Cyclone Chain Scrubber a while back and today was its inauguration. I used Simple Green for the cleaning. Wow did plenty come off. I was so amazed I did our commuter bikes too.
