Left Turns

April 29, 2018 Facts Travelling 2 Comments

We spent the day with M RG, starting with French toast, a drive by tour of the university of Arizona and then to Tucson Museum of Art and History. Itinerary courtesy of the ever considerate Mme MN. We had a great time looking at the paintings and sculptures and sharing perspectives and opinions. I didn’t know that M RG was Rodin’s model, though when in the pose it was obvious.

One of the main exhibits was of Howard Post’s paintings. The point of view, colors and shapes in his portrayals of the landscapes, livestock and people we’ve seen in our Southwest tour were captivating. Apparently he really competed in rodeo too. Looking at the scenes made plain the intensity of the sport which arose from the gauchos.

Being with M RG and family in general got me thinking about how our interests, attention, motivations and appreciations change over time. The terrific film Inside Out presents a beautiful model of why we behave as we do and uses this model to explore and explain how another’s actions, what we see on the outside, can be phenomenally complex on the inside. I particularly found the concept of Personality Islands wonderful, comforting and self-applicable.

Have you ever wondered what happens as time passes and friends or activities which, at the time at least, seemed irreplaceable and intrinsically self defining fall off the radar? I used to have a mighty Rowing Island. Gone now. Alternatively, an Island may go dormant, only to be reawakened, such as when we see an old friend or take out our painting kit that became dusty.

I’m glad to reconnect with M RG and am thankful for the opportunity provided by the anniversary celebration.

The beautiful evening and wonderful company made for hours of enjoyment. Fun, generous and kind, M DN and Mme MN are a role model. I’m glad to have them in my life.
