The Last Summer Day
There is a seasonal resident on the island who likes to swim in astonishingly robust conditions. For instance, during this week’s mega waves, he actually chose to go out from a beach where the swells are still larger. His superhero suit consists of a swimsuit, wetsuit vest and fins.
I asked how he actually gets past where I fear to enter. Apparently, the trick is to be able to hold your breath. Like, a lot. Then, obvious once said, you enter at the source of the rip current and ride it out. To avoid impending doom and the feeling of being tossed around in a washing machine from a crashing wave, he submerges and holds on to the sea floor until safe to continue. This, as was related, also keeps him from being dragged back to shore by such waves.
Easy As!
From our final walk on Kaitoke Beach. Per the clock, this picture on Great Barrier Island, NZ, took place not long before we landed in Honolulu.
